Water Treatment & Water Reclamation

Our Water Treatment Plant has a permitted capacity of 2 MGD with a current average daily production of 1.2 MGD. Raw water from the Tar River enters the intake structure and flows to the plant where the treatment process begins. Once treated the water enters the distribution system and the Town’s two elevated storage tanks.

Our Water Reclamation Facility has a permitted capacity of 1.37 MGD with a a current average daily flow of 0.58 MGD. Waste water leaves a home or business, enters the collection system and flows to the facility where it is treated with a Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) process and Extended Aeration. Once the wastewater has completed the treatment process it is then discharged back into the Tar River, cleaner than the river water itself.

Mission

Water Treatment

To protect public health and enhance the quality of life by providing our community with a reliable supply of safe, high-quality drinking water, and in compliance with all regulatory standards, in an environmentally responsible and cost-effective manner.

Water Reclamation

To protect public health and preserve our natural water resources by providing reliable and environmentally responsible wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal services, in continuous compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Guiding Principles

  • Public Health Protection: The primary principle is to eliminate or neutralize contaminants that cause disease to prevent waterborne illnesses. This is paramount and takes precedence over all other considerations.
  • Compliance with Regulations: All operations must strictly adhere to local, national, and international standards and permits (e.g., the Safe Drinking Water Act or the Clean Water Act). These regulations set minimum safety and quality standards.
  • Transparency and Accountability: Maintaining public trust by transparently reporting water quality data.
